Buy a whole new unit instead. By Damian (posted on 4/08/2019)
A fair bit of work involved though the first step's very easy and that involves emptying the your car's fuel tank. So basically a trip to the local shops and back and you're ready to go. Getting the fuel-tank sender unit out of the tank is also surprisingly easy with the tool provided with this kit. On inspecting the original resistor I could see it was the problem as half the wire covering it was worn through, in places completely gone. However replacing the resistor involves a bit of intricate and fiddly work and some soldering. Not having a solderer I took the whole unit down to an electronic store (Force Electronics here in Adelaide) and had them do it. They also tested to the unit telling me it wasn't sending a signal but refused to sand the wire with emery cloth also was provided with the kit as they deemed the wire to 'flimsy.' I however did give the wire a few gentle scrapes with the emery cloth then very carefully re-assembled the sender unit. On turning on the car's ignition the fuel gauge went to 'full' and stayed there. I then added 20 litres of fuel to the tank and the gauge again showed 'full' but on driving the car the fuel gauge needle began to wave around much like it had before, though not violently. Instead of pulling the unit out again and messing with it I'm hoping after a while it will eventually come good. However in hindsight I should have simply bought a whole new sender unit. I've bought a fair bit of stuff from Hemi Performance over the years and it's always worked well and been of high quality so I'm not overly disappointed this replacement part didn't quite work out.
